Over spring break last year, I went on a trip to Paris, Provence, and Barcelona. It was, of course, absolutely magical. Paris was our first stop, and within an hour of landing, the bustling vibrancy of this eclectic city had me falling in love.
If I loved Paris, then I made a lifetime commitment to Aix en Provence. Where the romantic city was busy, the country was calm, in a way. There was an abundance of land- flat green expanses and rolling hills covered in vineyards; ethereal groups of smooth-trunked trees and small hills blanketed in delicate-blossomed flowers.
The city and the countryside, with its smaller towns, were completely different. Right down to the smell. Paris plays games with your sense of smell, teasing you with tantalizing whiffs before appalling your nose with some wafting stink. While not all pleasant, the smell of Paris is uniquely satisfying.
Aix has a fuller, less complex scent. I was able to identify where the scents surrounding me had originated from. Crepes, flower trees, Chanel perfume on some elegant passerby. Diverse, yes, but less mashed together. Paris has a smell, while the countryside has smells.
The architecture was captivating. Ages old stones, intricate detail in the carving- all of the buildings were eye catching. The castles (for example, the Palais de Pope) were fabulous. The immensity and the age of each one was awe inspiring.
The Mediterranean was gorgeous as well. On our boat ride, I was able to just relax and appreciate the wonderful beauty. The water was crystal clear and a bone-shattering temperature. The spray from the waves dissolved into a fine mist that danced in the morning sunlight. The ocean was mesmerizing.
When the time came for us to move on from the Provence area to the city of Barcelona, I must admit I was somewhat saddened. I felt a bond with France, perhaps the same way every traveler is enchanted with the country. But in my eyes, it was new and amazing and a feeling that only I could understand. Love is a descriptive enough word, I suppose, I fell in love with France.
